30 Chic Days - Day Three


Day Three: Eat Fresh Stuff

Since making sure I have at least one piece of fresh fruit, a raw salad and steamed or stir-fried fresh vegetables every day, I've felt a lot more energetic and vibrant. I either have my piece of fruit in the morning or the afternoon, the salad with lunch and vegetables with dinner.


On days when I’m busy or lazy and don’t, I really miss it. In New Zealand there is a ‘5+’ campaign on tv encouraging five plus servings per day of fresh produce.

My fruit intake is one serving, and I would have at least two servings of vegetables in each of my lunch and dinner. And no, hot chips (fries) are not a vegetable serving. Jamie’s Food Revolution has just started on tv here. It’s rather shocking what people eat, and what is served in schools under ‘strict nutritional guidelines’.


You don’t need guidelines, you just need to eat real, good food. And I don't believe the advertising that says canned/frozen/dehydrated foods have just as much goodness as fresh. Nothing beats a bright green head of broccoli or a crispy carrot.

Now, there's no way I’m a saint, and there are certainly days when I have a fraction of the fresh food I need. But if I stick to my routine portions most of the time, I’m pretty happy with that.

    phew! got this one covered. it is shocking what americans eat and the obesity here is an epidemic. my daily intake of fresh fruit and vegetables is around 10 a day and it is not hard at all. i love the photos of your food and esp the onions.

    My husband and I have been trying to do the same thing. For us, it is eating not only a vegetable or fruit with every meal, but trying to make it a raw item as well (easy to do with fruit no so much with veggies). I had watched a documentary called, "Food Matters" which really got me interested in eating raw more often. And I heartily agree, canned, dehydrated versions of these things definitely are NOT the same. I had a nutrionist once tell me to eat Dole peach cups as a fruit choice--WHAT?! Again, the French and Mediterranean cultures (and Asian) have had this right for centuries. Love the pictures too!

  4. Janet, I was a bit worried for you that you wouldn't reach five. Just kidding. I knew you would be way up there. If I added up all my piles of veges and salad on the chopping board I'd be following close behind you I think, especially on stir-fry night.

    I used hand lotion more than normal yesterday too - if that's possible!

    HS, this is quite sad, that a NUTRITIONIST gave advice to eat sweetened, processed fruit. That's dessert, not fruit. I don't really dig salad for dinner, that's why I have a big one for lunch, to get more raw in. I adore Asian food too.

    im on board with day 3! what is it that you are cooking in that first photo? it looks really good.

    I indulged in fruit and veggies today too! i took myself back to my childhood snack of celery with peanut butter!

  6. I eat fresh products daily. I am also very fond of cooking and swanning about at the farmer's market here in Paris. I vary my fruit intake but I always have a banana before 10am daily;-)

  7. I am a huge supporter of this! I try and get a variety of fruits and veggies in my meals each day. My husband and I can tell a difference when we don't eat them and it's amazing how energized and healthy you feel when you do.

  8. Lenna, hi! Dinner was a chicken stir-fry with loads of veges - onion, garlic, green chili, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, mushrooms and yellow capsicum. I made a cheat's sauce of equal quantities of soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce thickened with a little cornflour mixed with some cold water. You can serve over basmati rice or not.

    Fashion, Art, I forget a bit about fruit too. Bananas are delicious but only when they are new. I can imagine you at the Paris markets.

  9. Can you post the recipe for what you are cooking? It looks divine! I really try to live by the same guidelines...fresh fruit, salad, and vegetables every day. Living this way I don't mind when my children have ice cream or a treat because I know they do not fill up on junk...they are eating well everyday.

    My husband says the same thing about our diet. The bad stuff we might eat every so often is additional to good, wholesome meals. We'll never die of scurvy here.
