30 Chic Days – The Fourth Series: Day 2




So here we are on Day 2 of the 30 Chic Days series!

If you’ve just caught up, jump back to Day 1 here.

To recap, the goals are:

Awareness of what I’m doing each day
Where I am placing my focus, and
Remembering what I want to achieve

Let’s get into Day 2:

What I ate

Breakfast – fresh chopped apple, mandarin and pineapple topped with rice porridge (hot), raw brazils, almonds and walnuts, a soy latte (homemade)

Lunch – scrambled eggs made in the microwave at work.  I usually use three eggs but there was four left and they were near their date so I had four – I certainly was kept full right up until dinnertime with all that protein!  Cooked at the same time in the egg mixture was some diced green capsicum (bell pepper) and sliced pepperoni.  These two ingredients were left over from mini pizzas we made on the weekend.  I love to use things up and it made my scrambled eggs extra yummy too.  After that I had an apricot Frooze Ball and tea with milk.

What is a Frooze Ball you ask?  Like a small truffle made with a date base and rolled in coconut.  I might have a go at making them one day but for now, I just buy bags for work and home.  They give me a more healthy sweet treat after lunch or dinner.  I love them in spite of the name!  Here’s the website so you can see what they are.  I see they are also called bliss balls when you make your own.

Dinner – Chicken thigh cutlets coated in seasoned breadcrumbs and baked in the oven, with roast potato, onion and carrot.  Steamed broccoli and cauliflower and gravy.  My husband cooked this.  A champagne flute of Perrier Lime to accompany.  Afterwards I had decaf coffee and a peanut butter Frooze Ball (my current favourite flavour).



Apart from tea and coffee, I drank water throughout the day as yesterday.

What I wore

My new teal fine-merino cowl-neck slouchy top with dark-wash skinny jeans and black suede Clarks ankle boots with a low-ish heel (I'm organising to take photos when I can).

How I moved

I went for an hour long meander before work, listening to my audiobook.

What I read

I’m listening to Mike Dooley’s Infinite Possibilities and it’s really illuminating.  He’s an amusing writer too so it’s not boring at all like some non-fiction books can be on audio.  I’d definitely recommend it – he’s new age, but also practical and down to earth and just when he says something that I think ‘yeah right’ (which is a more cynical version of ‘yeah but’), he then explains why he said what he said and it’s almost like he heard me think it!

Mike Dooley is the TUT/Notes from the Universe guy.  I just couldn't get into those, but after enjoying this book so much maybe I'll try again (you can subscribe for a daily email of oomph from Mike).

My focus for the day

I focused on my posture and not crossing my legs.  Whenever I reminded myself I’d feel the string pulling my head up whether standing or sitting, and resisted the urge to cross my legs when sitting because I know it’s better not to.  It’s just a habit, a very comfortable habit, but I want to have it be habit instead to sit with my legs next to each other, or crossed at the ankles.  That way I’m not twisting my back or creating veins on my legs down the track.  It’s something I’ve been working on for a while and it has become easier.

  1. Well bingo Ms Ferris, you gave me two ideas for winter meals. I never thought of serving hot porridge on top of fresh fruit -- that's an inspired idea. And I always make our lunches to take to work -- but scrambled eggs in the microwave could be a fun meal in the shop occasionally. Thank you.

  2. I started yesterday along with you! WWtoast, Greek yoghurt, black coffee, oj. Granola with blueberries, tea. Salade compose with gruyere, turkey, spinach, tomatoes, blackberries and strawberries with yoghurt, small glass of white wine. Wore chambray shirt over black tee, dark jeans, black loafers, turquoise jewelry.Walked 45 minutes. Checked off list!

    I'll keep this to myself unless I have a spectacular day! thanks for the encouragement.

  3. Fiona, I'm happy to see another 30 days series from you. I will be following along. I'm also trying to break myself of the habit of crossing my legs. I think, now if I was Queen, would I sit like this?! haha

  5. Rose, glad to help! I keep a dozen free-range eggs at work and they are a good backup lunch if I don't have anything else organised. Protein, protein, protein, it's the magic word to keep full through the afternoon. And the porridge/fruit thing, I was reluctant to give up my fruit for breakfast each day because enjoy it so much, but I wanted something 'warm and stodgy' to have when it's cold.

    Swissy, yay, so glad you're doing your own 30 chic days! Love that you've checked everything off :) Your meals sound YUMMY. I love gruyere cheese.

    Deborah, totally, the Queen would sit composed with legs straight :)

    Hostess, promise this is not a sponsored post ;) I just love Frooze Balls. I don't think you can get them anywhere other than New Zealand. I've got to find a recipe to make my own. Best get googling.

  6. I have been really watching my portion size since Tuesday morning and found that I had lost two pounds this morning. Today, my boss graciously treated me to Chinese for lunch. Instead of eating the whole meal and stuffing myself as usual, I ate half for lunch and am about to enjoy the other half for dinner. It's losing weight of course, but also being chic. Thank you for the inspiration. I may do 30 chic days one day on my blog. I will let you know if I do. I plan to order your book tomorrow! I am looking forward to it!

  7. What exactly is rice porridge? Sounds like something I would love. Do you make it yourself or does it come in a box like oatmeal?

  8. Michelle, I eat half often too. It's all baby steps.

    Kristien, I'm strictly gluten-free and I used to love rolled oats (porridge) in the winter but it's a contamination risk here in New Zealand so I found this rice porridge. It's nice, but it's not rolled oats :) http://www.hubbards.co.nz/what-we-make/34

  10. PP, you devil you peeking early ;)

    I found out that in New Zealand, no oats can be certified gluten-free because we're such a small country and oat crops grow next to wheat crops and they can become cross-contaminated. In the US, a much larger country, there are areas that are dedicated to oats and can be tested as gluten-free. It's only an issue for celiacs; anyone who is gluten-intolerant should be fine with any oats. That's as I understand it anyway. If I wanted to I could order gluten-free oats from the US but I haven't done that yet. Being of Scottish heritage I might have to order some so I don't have my card revoked :)

  11. I made buckwheat porridge with coconut milk for the first time last week and it was soooo delicious. Surprisingly buckwheat is a seed, not a form of wheat as the name suggests. It's a Hemsley & Hemsley recipe.

  12. Mara, that sounds so delicious! Thanks for the idea. French crepes are mostly made of buckwheat and I've enjoyed those when I've come across them. Coconut milk... yum.

  13. Fiona and Kristen62 (and others) - Have you tried Brookfarm's range of yummy gluten free cereals ? They are an Australian company, based here in beautiful Byron Bay. Sold in many stores and available online. Their website (brookfarm.com.au) lists their overseas distributors (including NZ).

    I am a huge fan of their 'porrij' (gluten free porridge), gluten free muesli, gluten free muesli bars and gluten free Bircher muesli since adopting a GF diet two years ago under medical advice. Family members are coeliac (ie STRICTLY GF as opposed to gluten intolerant like me) and they also love their stuff. I tried plain rice porridge but didn't love it. NOTE: I am in no way affiliated with Brookfarm's or their products, I just love their cereals. Sometimes I also add protein powder to my cereal as is sustains me until late morning / lunchtime.

  14. Thank you Lara, I will try Brookfarm, they all sound delicious. The rice porridge I have is sweetened and 'maple flavoured' so it will be nice to try a more natural brand. I'm pretty sure my sister (also celiac) has your 'porrij' and loves it. Protein powder is a good idea, I just need to find a gluten-free one.

  15. I have no idea what soy latte is (some sort of coffee, but with soy sauce? That sounds weird!) As for Frooze Balls ... the mind boggles? Never heard of those here in the UK, but perhaps they are a delicacy down under?

  16. Hi Margaret, lovely to hear from you. I make my coffee with soy milk rather than normal milk, and Frooze Balls are like bliss balls - dates and other fruits and nuts all minced up and rolled in coconut.
