{Hear} Being more feminine blog series

I love to feel feminine, and am always creating my own inspiration.  I find that introducing little pockets of femininity into my day helps everything run smoother.  I feel more ladylike and life is enjoyable – even when I’m doing mundane tasks.

The fourth post in this series is on using the sense of hearing to be more feminine.

Classical music

The right kind of classical music instantly elevates the frequency of an environment to me.  I used to think it was boring and old-fashioned when I was younger, and now, thankfully, I have grown into appreciating it.  I love that our favourite five-star hotel plays elegant sounding violin concertos and sometimes has a live harpist playing.

At home I have a playlist with lots of classical pieces which I have gradually curated to include only those that I love.  If anything is too clangy, strident or cannon-y, I delete it.  As a result I now listen to a mix of soothing strings and calming adagios.  Listen to the one below on YouTube, it’s glorious.  I feel instantly more elegant and refined when I have music like this playing (but I still love many other genres too!)

Having a lovely voice

In my book Thirty Chic Days, I mention that I strive to keep my voice pleasant.  I have horrors of turning into a shrewish, screeching fishwife; so to avoid this I try to remember to walk into a room to talk to someone rather than yell for them, and endeavour to speak as much as necessary and not dominate the conversation.  I don’t always manage it, but at least I try, right?

Instead of fishwife, I’m going to aim for Lady Mary Crawley.

And another thing: do you ever leave somewhere thinking ‘I couldn’t stop talking; whatever must they think of me?’  I do!  Or rather, I did.  I think (I hope) I am better at this now – the two-conversation thing where you ask questions of others and actually listen to what they say.  The two ears, one mouth thing is so on point, as always.

Do you enjoy classical music?  Is it boring or elegant to you?  What about your voice… fishwife?  Or Lady Mary?  Your secret is safe with me.

PS. It’s not too late to get some inspiration and enthusiasm for Christmas with my book A Chic and Simple Christmas, available from Amazon in print and on Kindle.  Inspire yourself!  Here is what readers have to say:

‘I just read every word of this beautiful book and it felt like a loving friend was holding my hand and saying it's okay that Christmas stresses you out, it's okay if you don't love everything about Christmas. It was such a relief to read this book. I'm glad I gave myself permission to disappear from family for a bit and relax and read it.’

‘Fiona is like your best friend that you have over for coffee and a little chat. Her books are so inspiring and down to earth. She is definately a breath of fresh air in that she is direct, honest, and delightful in her writings. Christmas time has always been such an exciting time of year for me but I cannot say that it was ever a Chic or Simple Christmas, by the time the Christmas Celebration arrived , I was frazzled and unfortunately what I spread to family and friends was very short of any holiday cheer. I sat down with a cup of coffee and my warm knitted slippers and read this wonderful book which presented such a simplistic approach to the holiday season that keeps the season what it truly should be: Chic and Simple. With Fiona's suggestions and a great deal of holiday cheer, I am confident that this year will be a very Chic and Simple Christmas as I celebrate this season with grace and ease. Thank you Fiona for another great book!!’

{Smell} Being more feminine blog series

A Christmas present to myself... the third bar is already in use.

I love to feel feminine, and am always creating my own inspiration.  I find that introducing little pockets of femininity into my day helps everything run smoother.  I feel more ladylike and life is enjoyable – even when I’m doing mundane tasks.

The third post in this series is on using the sense of smell to be more feminine.

Wine ‘tasting’

You may already know that I don’t drink, and haven’t for a number of years now (you can read my blog posts about that here and here).  But, I still love to smell the bouquet of wine and pick out different notes.  I  know this sounds strange, but wine is like perfume to me now in that I am happy to smell it but have no desire to drink it.

My husband is a wine enthusiast and likes to try different wines, so whenever he has something a bit different he always offers it to me to have a sniff of.  It’s quite fascinating how many notes there are in wine, and a helpful thing to do is either read the description on the bottle to see if you can pick out the notes, or google that particular varietal to see what common characteristics are.

But just how is this feminine?  When I sniff for wine notes, it feels a little bit artistic, a little bit slow-living.  It’s taking the time to notice the details, and that in itself feels quite feminine.  Living life deliberately, moving graciously, taking your time, and not rushing.

Fragrance

I couldn’t do a post on being feminine with the sense of smell without mentioning perfume.  Every day, no matter what I am doing, I wear perfume.  Sometimes it is ‘perfumey’, sometimes it is a fresh and light 'skin scent'.  I even put perfume on to go for a walk.

I’ve been experimenting with perfume oils lately, both essential oil type ones and inexpensive fragrant oils such as White Musk from The Body Shop.  I usually prefer a little more ‘volume’ than an oil can provide, however they are fantastic to wear at work or when you are getting into a car with someone.

Remember how your mother or grandmother used to just about gas you with their heady 1980s perfume just before you went out as a family?  Sorry mum, but actually it was more nana who loved those spicy perfumes that would have us all winding down the window (may you rest in peace dear nana, rocking that pongy perfume in heaven).

Another nice way to subtley fragrance yourself is with a perfumed body lotion.  Some are so long-lasting that you don’t need to add perfume.

Scented candles are quite commonplace these days, and beautiful of course, but for a change I like to burn incense sometimes.  There are pretty, not too hippy smelling incenses you can get – I love rose, vanilla, ‘fresh linen’ and sandalwood.  Lighting incense always gives me a relaxing yoga/spa retreat type feeling.

Quite a few years ago L’Occitane sold incense in sticks and cones, and as with everything from this company, they were gorgeous.  Sadly, their incense range seems to have been discontinued.  A freshly cleaned house with soft music playing and an incense stick just list = divine.

Soap too: I love nice soap.  While I’m on L’Occitane, I opened this week a bar of their Lemon Verbena soap.  So delicious!  It’s weird, I’m quite thrifty with some things, but I’ll happily buy a bar of French soap for myself.

Are you a soap girl or shower gel?  Incense, candle or nothing?  And I’d love to know, could you handle sniffing wine and not drinking it, or is that just oddball me?

PS. If you live in the northern hemisphere, take a look at my newest book 'How to be Chic in the Winter: Living slim, happy and stylish during the cold season'.  Here's what lovely reader Karen had to say about it:

'Great encouragement for anyone.  I've really enjoyed reading "How to be Chic in the Winter." I've been surprised by how thoroughly Fiona Ferris considered the subject and all of its facets. She managed to make many very useful and thoughtful points while writing with a casual, accessible style.

Fiona had my attention early, when she wrote "Please do not wish away the cold season, because that means you are wishing your life away; why not enjoy yourself instead?" This book isn't just about winter, folks! It's about our attitudes and our choices at every challenging turn of life. Fiona's suggestions can apply even if you enjoy the cooler months -- her themes hold true if you hate hot weather instead, or if you're struggling in a less than optimal workplace, or dealing with a chronic illness. Her ideas and encouragement to THRIVE in all circumstances can apply to anyone. I will definitely be re-reading Fiona's book and sharing it with my friends.'

{Sight} Being more feminine blog series

I love to feel feminine, and am always creating my own inspiration.  I find that introducing little pockets of femininity into my day helps everything run smoother.  I feel more ladylike and life is enjoyable – even when I’m doing mundane tasks.

The second post in this series is on using the sense of sight to be more feminine.

Appreciating art

I was reading UK Hello Magazine the other day (I love it!), and there was an interview with Terry Gunzberg, former YSL employee (she invented the iconic Touche Eclat) and founder of her bespoke makeup brand By Terry.  She lives in a divine, rather nice home in Paris and I loved what she had to say about art.  She has been collecting for years, a piece at a time, and she bought a small artwork with her first paycheck.

She said her mother took her to galleries when she was young, and that she gained an appreciation from that.  I don’t often go to galleries, but when I do, I enjoy viewing the paintings, particularly older ones.  At high school I studied art history for a year and I can still remember details of the renaissance paintings we studied.

The study of art seems like such a feminine pursuit to me.  There are many ways to be cultured and I choose art as one of mine (it makes up for the fact that I don’t enjoy live theatre and am so-so about ballet).

Viewing beautiful images

I've mentioned Victoria magazine a million times, but leafing through a copy (I declutter most other magazines but not Victoria) is like a feast for the eyes.  My own personal and decor style is much simpler than those pictured, but I am always inspired to be more ladylike and refined afterwards.

Glossy picture books are the same - Vicki Archer's 'My French Life' and 'French Essence' transport me to Paris via stunning large-scale images, and her writing style allows me to dream.  I adore them both, but if I had to pick a favourite, I'd choose My French Life by a pip.

There are blogs that delight the eyes also - Mrs Shockley's A Home for Elegance has gorgeously curated images, and Margaret Powling's Devon Dreaming is lovely also - I particularly love the latest two posts on fashion and perfume.  From what I've seen of both of these ladies homes, they take a great deal of care in making them elegant and feminine in their own style.

Do you have a femininity with sight tip to add?  Please share in the comments below, I’d really love to hear.
