Oh Fiona! You have done it again! Well done! I am in my late 50's and am more than half way to a 4 stone weight loss goal. How? I joined a well known UK slimming club and attend weekly and whilst I already do a lot of walking I have also started to do a few fun classes at my local Leisure Centre such as Zumba. All well and good, however...........the atmosphere at the slimming class is a bit "forced upbeat", because that is how they train their consultants to be - upbeat. A lot of the classes at the leisure centre are accompanied by pounding music that echos off the walls. It is all too noisy and I have often thought I would love to find a more gentler, soothing, elegant and chic way to lose weight and get fit. Then along comes you book. I took a look at Amazon and read your sample and thought yes that is the mindset and approach that resonates with me and can't wait to incorporate it into my weight loss journey. What I have learned is it starts with your shopping list. If you buy healthy foods that you enjoy you will eat healthily and enjoy it. My slimming club does allow a daily ration of higher calorie "treats" - a glass of wine, a cake. However, there is still a bit of a "I can still indulge in a small amount of junk food" feel to it all. There is no sense of healthy eating, elegant treats or joy. The food IS healthy but it is the way it is talked about. Take a salad as an example. The consultant will promote a highly processed low calorie supermarket dressing but never mentions making your own home made dressing of lemon juice, fresh herbs grown in pots in the garden, a pinch of mustard etc. Much more chic and fun. Now along comes Fiona's book which I am looking forward to reading. Now next time I write out my shopping list, I will adopt some of your mindset, use a beautiful pen, a beautiful notepad, write down my usual basics, milk, fruit and veg etc, and peruse one of my small selection of cookery books for a new recipe to try. Maybe even go so far as to put some relaxing music on and light a scented candle to enjoy whilst I write it. Ahhhh.....I feel a sense of calm descending on me already......... Which brings me to an important point - stress. That can lead to high levels of Cortisol that can lead to fat accumulation around the abdomen. It is important to find ways to relax, calm down and manage stress. Thank you Fiona, keep up the good work. I think you may find this will be your best selling book so far.
Congrats on your progress so far! I agree with all your sentiments: that sometimes diet places encourage you to eat the junky stuff ('just a small portion'), and that buying healthy foods you enjoy is key. Making it chic is a wonderful tool too :) I hope you enjoy the new book! x
