Am starting back to work tomorrow after 2 weeks off for the Christmas holiday and all I am focusing on is what I DIDN'T get done. Not that we had a really fun New Year's Eve party for neighbors and Christmas fun with our son at home and a movie and dinner out the three of us. You are so right about the negative self-talk...so silly!

I will definitely be putting some of your suggestions into practice.

Happy New Year!LunaStitcheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18148358880396801009noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130537499074859934.post-1316774782388101142016-01-04T10:36:51.144+13:002016-01-04T10:36:51.144+13:00Thanks so much Fiona, fab ideas that I hope to put...Thanks so much Fiona, fab ideas that I hope to put in to practice this year!Edinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08856506193612707656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130537499074859934.post-73927282688363354292016-01-03T08:08:21.507+13:002016-01-03T08:08:21.507+13:00Hi Fiona,

I aim to make time to do this every second weekend so there is enough on hand, but yet it's still fun and not a chore.

You have lots of great suggestions here - thanks for your tips. Here's to 2016!

Alison
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130537499074859934.post-55238325753013339872016-01-03T06:27:55.997+13:002016-01-03T06:27:55.997+13:00Thank you for this post, Fiona! This is an idea that I'll definitely use - so I set myself up for success. I probably read a book a day, or close to it, just from my commute time. I also picked my commute books carefully- things I could fall into and shut out the world around me- without missing my stop!

For cleaning, establish a routine. Your spouse should be part of the routine, BTW. If you're doing all the work, resentment will build up fast. Figure out what your cleaning priorities are. What makes you feel "Our home is clean?" For me, it's having the floor swept and a fresh tablecloth in the dining room.

For meals, I do a lot of make ahead and freeze meals. Frozen dinners can be very nice indeed when it's something you made and portioned out ahead of time. Pull out a couple containers of whatever you want for dinner in the morning, then serve them with a starch if you like them, a salad or side vegetable like steamed broccoli, which can be made quickly in the microwave or on the stove if you're using frozen veg. Add a piece of dark chocolate and some fruit and you're fed. Not so much for the commute, because ours is 'only' 20-30 minutes each way, but to be in a smaller town versus a city. It's a big decision for anyone, but it's something that we don't think about sometimes; we just think where we live is where we live.

Brian Tracy talks about zero-based thinking, which simply means 'if I had a choice where I could start again afresh/with no prior ties: where would I live, what would I do, how would I live etc'. It's an illuminating exercise to think about.Fiona Ferrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01493105915055099408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130537499074859934.post-70824034427357213212016-01-02T12:08:33.128+13:002016-01-02T12:08:33.128+13:00A great bit of advice for us all. It is a big change, but we have just rethought our lives and have decided that the long drives home during the wee hours of the night after huge days at work were too dangerous (my husband is an anaesthetist and does this regularly and in thick fog), so we have sold our 154 acre farm and huge garden, and have bought a small suburban block a short walk from work overlooking a creek and billabong. We will build a light filled smaller house with private courtyard garden.
Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07669497791582808521noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4130537499074859934.post-13026716632274119122016-01-02T09:46:15.887+13:002016-01-02T09:46:15.887+13:00Thank you Anna. Then prioritize the items from greatest importance to least, and cross off the bottom 20%. You'll get the important things done and still have time for yourself left over. The rest can wait for another day :)Annanoreply@blogger.com
